Everything you need to know about Dortmund

Best time to visit

May–September for mild weather and blooming parks; December for one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany, with its giant tree in the centre.

Getting from the airport

Dortmund Airport (DTM) is about 13 km from the centre: the AirportExpress reaches Dortmund Hbf in around 25 min, or take the shuttle to Holzwickede station + train. Taxi ~25–30€.

Getting around the city

A Stadtbahn (U-Bahn), tram and bus network (DSW21). The day ticket covers the whole centre, and many attractions are just a few steps from the station.

Practical tips

German is spoken, but English works in the tourist area. Dortmund is an excellent hub for the Ruhr region — Cologne, Düsseldorf and Essen are less than an hour away by train.

  • If the airline cancels your flight and does not offer a reasonable alternative, you are entitled to a full refund. We process the refund through the platform, in line with the applicable policies — you do not need to contact the airline directly. Flight tickets are generally non-refundable in the case of a passenger-initiated cancellation. Changes are possible depending on the conditions set by the airline and the timing of the request — additional costs may apply (change fees and/or fare differences).

  • Winter (Jan–Feb) and early autumn. Low-cost flights to Dortmund fill up quickly for Borussia Dortmund match weekends — book 6–8 weeks in advance for the best price.

  • Yes — most airlines offer checked baggage and seat selection as separate options, with prices varying by airline and route. The easiest way is to add them directly to your booking on TravelTheme: you get all the options in one place, without going to the airline's website. This way you avoid airport surcharges — baggage added at check-in can cost 2–3× more than booking it in advance. Seats with extra legroom and window or aisle seats fill up fast — select yours when you book the ticket.

  • Signal Iduna Park and the German Football Museum for sports fans, Dortmunder U and Westfalenpark for art and nature, plus the Phoenix See lake for a relaxing stroll. It is also the gateway to the Ruhr region — Cologne, Düsseldorf and Essen are close by.
