Larnaca, Cyprus — Charter holiday

New Year's Eve in Cyprus, between Larnaca, Limassol and Ayia Napa: palm-lined seafronts, flamingos on the salt lake and 17°C by day, two hours' flight from home.

New Year's Eve on the south-east coast of Cyprus means small towns by the sea, palm-lined seafronts and mild winter days: around 17°C during the day, often sunny, with cool evenings. It is not beach weather, but it is ideal for walks, tavernas and trips. Cyprus is on the same time as Romania, you pay in euros and your ID card is enough to get in.

The packages include a flight from Bucharest, accommodation and transfer, with departures on 28 December for 7 nights and on 29 December for 5 nights, returning in the first days of January. The hotels are in Larnaca, Limassol, Ayia Napa and Protaras; which hotels have rooms depends on the date, and you see the price of each one in the offer, before you pay.

Top attractions in Larnaca

Larnaca: the seafront and the Church of St Lazarus

The Finikoudes seafront, with palm trees, cafés and the medieval fort at its end, is the heart of town. A few streets back, the 9th-century Church of St Lazarus holds the tomb of the man Jesus raised from the dead, who, according to tradition, became the first bishop of Larnaca.

The flamingos of the salt lake

In winter, the salt lake near the airport fills with water and with thousands of pink flamingos, who stay until spring. On the shore stands the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, surrounded by palm trees. It is easy to reach from town, and a walk along the lakeside path takes about an hour.

Cape Greco

Near Ayia Napa, the Cape Greco nature park has white cliffs carved by the sea, caves, a stone arch called the Lovers' Bridge and very clear blue water. In winter it is quiet, and it is the most beautiful place for a walk on the east coast.

New Year's Eve in Limassol

Limassol is the liveliest town on the coast: the Molos seafront, the marina with its restaurants, the old town around the medieval castle and the most places to go out on New Year's Eve. A few kilometres away are the ancient theatre of Kourion, above the sea, and the vineyards in the hills.

New Year's Eve dinner

Hotels and tavernas usually have a New Year's Eve menu with music and need booking early. On 1 January, St Basil's Day, Cypriots cut the vasilopita, a sweet bread with a coin hidden inside. Try a long meze, with grilled halloumi and souvla.
