South Africa tours with flights from Romania
Tour with flight, accommodation, transfer, meals and activities included.
Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope and safari around Kruger: a tour through South Africa's landscapes and history.
A tour of South Africa links two worlds: the bush of the north-east, where you head out on safari in search of the Big Five, and Cape Town, with Table Mountain, the Stellenbosch winelands and the road to the Cape of Good Hope.
Along the way you discover the country's recent history, from Robben Island to Soweto, scenery that changes from one day to the next and a cuisine shaped by African, Dutch and Asian influences.
What you will see on the tour
Table Mountain
The flat-topped mountain above Cape Town can be climbed on marked trails or reached by the rotating cable car. From the top you see the city, the bay and Robben Island; in strong winds the cable car may pause.
Boulders Beach and the Cape of Good Hope
Near Simon’s Town lives a colony of African penguins, which you watch from boardwalks just a few metres away. The road continues to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, a peninsula of cliffs and baboons.
Safari around Kruger National Park
One of Africa's largest national parks, home to elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards and lions, the famous Big Five. Game drives at dawn or late afternoon are the best times to spot the animals.
Robben Island
The prison island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in detention, now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Boats leave from the V&A Waterfront, and tours are often led by former political prisoners.
Everything you need to know before you go
When to go
The seasons are the reverse of Europe's. For safari, the dry southern winter (May to September) is ideal, while Cape Town is warm and sunny from November to March. Spring (September to November) suits both.
What you see along the way
Classic routes combine Johannesburg and Soweto, the Panorama Route with the Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window, the Kruger area and Cape Town. Some tours add the Garden Route, the coast of lagoons and forests between Mossel Bay and Tsitsikamma.
Good to know
Distances are long, so the programme usually includes a domestic flight between the north-east and Cape Town. Sockets are the South African type with three round pins, so pack an adaptor. Tipping is customary in restaurants.
Local food
Try a braai, the South African barbecue, Cape Malay bobotie (curried mince baked under an egg custard), biltong, boerewors and malva pudding. The Stellenbosch and Franschhoek winelands are known for pinotage.
