India tours, India — Tour

The Taj Mahal at sunrise, the palaces of Rajasthan and the ghats of Varanasi: India in full colour, on an organised route.

India overwhelms you in the best possible way: colour, the scent of spices, temples and maharajas' palaces. The classic tours follow the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Amber Fort and the Palace of the Winds.

Longer itineraries head on to Udaipur, Jodhpur or Varanasi, where the aarti ceremony lights up the banks of the Ganges every evening. Hotels and transfers are arranged, and each offer sets out the exact programme.

What you will see on the tour

The Taj Mahal, Agra

The white marble mausoleum built in the 17th century by the emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. At sunrise the marble takes on a rosy glow; the monument is closed to visitors on Fridays.

Amber Fort, Jaipur

A sandstone and marble fortress in the hills outside Jaipur, with grand courtyards, the mirror-covered halls of the Sheesh Mahal and views over Maota Lake. It is one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan listed by UNESCO.

The aarti ceremony in Varanasi

Every evening on Dashashwamedh Ghat, priests perform the fire ritual on the banks of the Ganges, with lamps, bells and chanting. At dawn, a boat ride along the ghats shows the holy city waking up.

Ranthambore National Park

Once the hunting ground of the maharajas of Jaipur, today one of India's best-known tiger reserves. Jeep safaris wind past lakes and dry forest, beneath the walls of a medieval fort.

Everything you need to know before you go

When to go

October to March is the ideal season for northern India: sunny days, 20–30°C and cool nights, although December–January mornings can be foggy in Delhi and Agra. April to June is very hot, and July to September brings the monsoon.

What you see on the way

Delhi, with the Qutub Minar, India Gate and Chandni Chowk market; Agra, with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort; Jaipur, the “Pink City”, with the Hawa Mahal and Amber Fort. Longer routes take in Udaipur, the city of lakes, Jodhpur, the blue city, or Varanasi.

Good to know

Drink only bottled water and avoid ice and raw vegetables in small eateries. In temples you take off your shoes and cover your shoulders and knees. Traffic is heavy, so a short hop on the map can mean several hours on the road.

Local food

Try a thali (a platter of several dishes), butter chicken and dal makhani in Delhi, biryani, samosas and masala chai. In Rajasthan look for dal baati churma, and cool down with a lassi.
