France tours, France — Tour

Paris, the Loire châteaux, Mont-Saint-Michel and the villages of Provence — classic France, joined up in a single journey.

A tour of France shows you several sides of the country on one trip: the boulevards and museums of Paris, the Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley, the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel on its tidal island, the medieval towns of Provence and the Normandy cliffs.

Between stops, the road winds through vineyards, stone villages and markets where cheese and wine are bought straight from the producers.

What you will see on the tour

Paris

The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame cathedral, reopened in December 2024 after the fire, and Montmartre are the landmarks almost no tour leaves out. In the evening, a boat trip on the Seine shows the city lit up.

The Loire châteaux

The Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to dozens of Renaissance châteaux. Chambord, with its double spiral staircase, and Chenonceau, built across the river Cher, are the most visited, while the château at Amboise holds Leonardo da Vinci's tomb.

Mont-Saint-Michel

The medieval abbey rises from a rocky island in the bay between Normandy and Brittany, where the tides are among the largest in Europe. At high tide the water surrounds the island; at low tide the bay becomes a vast expanse of sand.

Lavender in Provence

On the Valensole plateau and around Sénanque Abbey, the lavender fields bloom from late June to mid-July. The rest of the year, Provence is just as rewarding for the Luberon villages, Avignon and the Palace of the Popes.

Everything you need to know before you go

When to go

April–June and September–October are the most pleasant months for a tour, with mild weather and fewer visitors. July and August are hot and busy but bring the Provence lavender and long evenings, and December brings the Christmas markets of Alsace.

What you see along the way

Classic tours combine Paris with the Loire Valley, Normandy and Mont-Saint-Michel. Other routes head south through Lyon, Provence and the Côte d'Azur, or east into Alsace, to Strasbourg and Colmar. The exact programme is in each offer.

Good to know

For the big Paris museums it is best to book entry in advance, and the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. In small towns, shops often close at lunchtime and on Sundays, and in restaurants service is included in the bill.

Local food

Every region has its specialities: croissants and baguettes in Paris, crêpes and cider in Brittany, camembert in Normandy, bœuf bourguignon in Burgundy and ratatouille in Provence. Here the cheese board is a course in its own right.

Frequently asked questions

What does a tour of France include?
The tour includes the return flight from Romania, accommodation along the route, transfers, and the meals and activities included in the programme, plus TravelTheme assistance throughout the trip. The exact route, meals and visits vary from tour to tour and are set out in each offer.
How long is a tour and what route does it follow?
The length varies from offer to offer. Many tours start in Paris and continue to one or more regions: the Loire Valley and Normandy, Provence and the Côte d'Azur, or Alsace. The number of days and the exact stops are listed in each tour's programme.
When is the best time for a tour of France?
Late spring and early autumn are ideal: mild weather, gardens in bloom or the grape harvest, and fewer crowds. Summer suits the coast and the lavender, while winter goes well with Paris and the Christmas markets.
What documents do I need for France?
France is part of the European Union and the Schengen area, so a valid identity card is enough for Romanian citizens. You can also travel on your passport if you prefer.
What currency is used in France?
The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including in cafés and at ticket machines. A little cash is handy at farmers' markets and in small villages.
