Brazil tours, Brazil — Tour

Rio de Janeiro, the Iguaçu Falls and the Amazon: Brazil with a samba beat, endless beaches and nature on a vast scale.

A tour of Brazil brings together places that are hard to combine on your own in a single trip: Rio de Janeiro, with Christ the Redeemer and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the Iguaçu Falls on the Argentine border, colonial Salvador or the rainforest around Manaus.

The route, the pace and the visits are already arranged, so all you need to think about is the scenery, the music and the food.

What you will see on the tour

Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain

The statue of Christ on Corcovado and the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain give the best-known views over Guanabara Bay and the city of Rio de Janeiro, especially at sunset.

The Iguaçu Falls

Nearly three hundred waterfalls on the border between Brazil and Argentina, inside a UNESCO-listed national park. The Brazilian side gives you the full panorama, and a walkway takes you right up close to the Devil's Throat.

Copacabana and Ipanema

Rio's two iconic beaches, with Copacabana's black-and-white wave-patterned promenade, kiosks selling fresh coconut water and sunsets watched from the Arpoador rocks at the end of Ipanema.

The Amazon at Manaus

Boat trips on the Rio Negro take you through the flooded forest and to the Meeting of the Waters, where the dark river runs for miles alongside the sandy-coloured Solimões without mixing.

Everything you need to know before you go

When to go

April to June and August to November are good months for a tour, with pleasant temperatures in Rio. December to March is the southern summer, hot and humid, with Carnival in February or March; the Iguaçu Falls usually carry the most water then.

What you see along the way

Rio de Janeiro is almost always the centrepiece, together with the Iguaçu Falls. Many tours add Salvador da Bahia and its historic Pelourinho district, the Amazon around Manaus or the colonial town of Paraty, on the coast between Rio and São Paulo.

Good to know

Brazil is about twice the size of the European Union, so the long legs are usually covered by domestic flights. The language is Portuguese, not Spanish, and in big cities it is wise to leave jewellery at home and keep your phone out of sight on the street.

Local food

Try feijoada (black bean stew with pork), all-you-can-eat churrasco in a churrascaria, fish moqueca with coconut milk in Bahia and pão de queijo. Caipirinhas and açaí bowls are everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What does a tour of Brazil include?
The tour includes the flight from Romania, accommodation along the whole route, transfers, the meals and activities listed in the programme, and TravelTheme assistance. The exact itinerary, meals, included visits and optional excursions are set out in each tour's offer.
How many days does a tour last and what is the route like?
The length varies from tour to tour, and the exact number of days is shown in each offer. Distances are huge, so a route usually combines Rio de Janeiro and the Iguaçu Falls with one or two other regions, such as Salvador or the Amazon.
When is the best time for a tour of Brazil?
April to June and August to November are the most balanced periods, without the oppressive heat of the southern summer. It rains often in the Amazon all year, most of all from December to May, while winter in Rio (June to August) is mild and sunny.
What documents do I need for Brazil?
Romanian citizens do not need a visa for a short tourist stay; you need a passport, ideally valid for at least six months. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some regions, including the Amazon. Check the current requirements before you travel.
What currency is used in Brazil?
The local currency is the Brazilian real (BRL). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis and many stalls, but it is useful to carry a few reais in cash for markets, beaches and tips.
