Hammamet, Tunisia — Exotic holiday

Long fine-sand beaches, a walled medina right by the sea and thalassotherapy on the shores of the Gulf of Hammamet in Tunisia.

Hammamet is one of Tunisia's best-known resorts, with wide beaches of fine sand along the gulf that shares its name and an old walled medina right by the sea.

Between beach days you can try thalassotherapy, browse the pottery market in Nabeul or take a trip to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the Roman amphitheatre at El Jem. The flight from Romania takes around two and a half hours.

What to see in Hammamet

Hammamet medina

The old town, enclosed by walls and crowned by its kasbah fortress, sits right beside the beach. From the ramparts you see the whole gulf, and the white lanes are lined with workshops, carpets, pottery and cafés serving mint tea.

The beaches of Yasmine Hammamet

In the south of the resort, Yasmine Hammamet has broad fine-sand beaches that shelve gently into the sea, ideal for families, plus a marina with restaurants and the Carthage Land theme park for children.

Thalassotherapy and hammam

Tunisia is a well-known thalassotherapy destination, and many Hammamet hotels have centres offering seawater and seaweed treatments. A traditional hammam, with a steam bath and a scrub, completes the experience.

A trip to the Sahara

A two-day excursion heads south to the oasis of Tozeur, the Chott el-Jerid salt lake and the dunes at Douz, with a camel ride and a stop at the troglodyte homes of Matmata, where scenes from Star Wars were filmed.

Everything you need to know about Hammamet

When to go to Hammamet

The beach season runs from May to October. July and August bring 30–33°C, while June and September are gentler, with a warm sea. Spring and autumn are good for trips to the south and to the ancient sites.

Where to stay

Hammamet Nord has older hotels set between gardens and the beach, close to the centre and the medina. Yasmine Hammamet, to the south, has newer resorts, the marina and Medina Mediterranea, a complex built in traditional style.

Excursions

The airport–hotel transfer is included. Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said, near Tunis, are about an hour's drive away. The Roman amphitheatre at El Jem, one of the best preserved in the world, and the holy city of Kairouan make a good day trip.

Local food

Try brik with egg and tuna, fish couscous, ojja with eggs and harissa, lablabi chickpea soup and date-filled makroud pastries. Neighbouring Nabeul is famous for its harissa and its pottery.
