What to see in Mauritius over the holidays
Le Morne Brabant
The 556-metre mountain in the south-west of the island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a refuge of runaway slaves. The hike to the top takes a few hours there and back, with the turquoise lagoon below in full view.
Chamarel
The Seven Coloured Earths, dunes of volcanic soil, and the Chamarel waterfall, nearly 100 metres high, a few minutes apart. The road passes coffee plantations and the village rum distillery.
Île aux Cerfs
The island off the east coast, with white-sand beaches and a shallow lagoon. It is reached by boat from Trou d'Eau Douce, and the day can be combined with the Grand River South East waterfall.
Port Louis
The island's capital: the Jummah Mosque and the Chinatown gate, the central market with fruit and spices, the Caudan Waterfront and Aapravasi Ghat, the UNESCO-listed immigration depot.
