What to see in Zanzibar over the holidays

Stone Town

The island's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, the Darajani bazaar and, in the evening, the food market in the Forodhani Gardens. Best explored on foot, ideally with a local guide.

Nungwi and Kendwa

In the north of the island the sea stays deep even at low tide, so you can swim at any hour. The beaches face west, and in the evening the sun sets straight into the ocean.

Mnemba Atoll

A marine reserve off the north-east coast, with coral reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles. Snorkelling boat trips leave in the morning, and dolphins are often spotted on the way.

Jozani Forest

The island's only national park, home to the red colobus monkeys found nowhere but Zanzibar, with a boardwalk trail through the mangroves. The tour takes about two hours.
