Edinburgh Castle, the Highlands, Loch Ness and whisky distilleries: Scotland on an organised tour of Great Britain.
Our tours of Great Britain focus on Scotland, a land of castles, deep lochs and hills covered in heather that turns purple in late summer. Many routes start in Edinburgh, with the castle, the Royal Mile and the Georgian New Town, before heading into the Highlands through Glencoe to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle.
Along the way come whisky distilleries, fishing villages and, on some itineraries, the Isle of Skye or Glasgow. Each offer sets out the exact programme.
What you will see on the tour
Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile
Perched on a volcanic crag, the castle dominates the city and holds the Scottish crown jewels. From its gates the Royal Mile runs down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, past pubs, tartan shops and hidden closes.
Glencoe
This glacial valley in the Highlands, hemmed in by steep mountains, is one of Scotland's most striking landscapes and a good spot for short scenic walks. Scenes from several films were shot here, including the Harry Potter series.
Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle
The long, dark loch in the Great Glen, famous for the legend of Nessie, is best seen from a short cruise. On its shore, the ruins of Urquhart Castle make one of the best-known views in the Highlands.
Whisky distilleries
Scotland has well over a hundred distilleries, grouped into regions such as Speyside, the Highlands and Islay. A tour with a tasting shows how malted barley becomes single malt and why each region's whisky tastes different.
Everything you need to know before you go
When to go
May to September is the best time: long days, with light until after 10pm in June, 15–20°C and open roads. The weather can change quickly even in summer, and in August Edinburgh is packed with festivals and in high demand.
What you see on the way
Edinburgh, with its castle and Old Town; Stirling, with its castle and the Wallace Monument; the Highlands, via Glencoe and Fort William, on to Loch Ness and Inverness. Some itineraries include the Isle of Skye, Speyside or Glasgow.
Good to know
Sockets are the British three-pin type, so bring an adaptor. Traffic drives on the left. Contactless cards work almost everywhere, even in taxis and small pubs. In summer, pack insect repellent for the Highland midges.
Local food
Try haggis with neeps and tatties, Cullen skink made with smoked haddock, Scottish salmon, a full Scottish breakfast and shortbread with your tea. In the evening, a dram of single malt in a local pub.
