Vietnam tours, Vietnam — Tour

From Hanoi and Ha Long Bay to Hoi An and the Mekong Delta: Vietnam from north to south, in a single tour.

Vietnam has more than 3,000 kilometres of coastline, and a tour runs from one end to the other: Hanoi's Old Quarter, the karsts of Ha Long Bay, the imperial citadel in Hue, the lanterns of Hoi An and the canals of the Mekong Delta.

Along the way you discover terraced rice fields, lively markets and fresh cooking, with fragrant herbs at every meal.

What you will see on the tour

Ha Long Bay

Jungle-topped limestone islands and pillars rise from the water across this UNESCO-listed bay. A cruise among them, sometimes with a night on board, passes caves such as Sung Sot and sheltered coves where you can go kayaking.

Hoi An old town

A former trading port with merchants' houses, Chinese temples and the covered Japanese Bridge, Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening the streets glow with silk lanterns, and local tailors can make clothes to measure in a day or two.

The Mekong Delta

Before reaching the sea, the river splits into several branches among orchards, rice paddies and stilt villages. By boat you glide along narrow canals and past floating markets, where fruit is sold straight from the boats.

Hanoi: the Old Quarter and the Temple of Literature

The streets of the old guilds, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Temple of Literature, home to Vietnam's first university in the 11th century. In the evening, a water puppet show reveals one of the north's oldest traditions.

Everything you need to know before you go

When to go

The climate varies from north to south. For a tour of the whole country, February to April is the most balanced period: pleasant in the north, dry season in the centre and south. October and November bring heavy rain to the centre.

What you see along the way

The classic route starts in Hanoi and heads to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, with the rice fields and grottoes of Tam Coc, continues to Hue and Hoi An in the centre via the Hai Van Pass, and ends in Ho Chi Minh City with the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta.

Good to know

The long distances between north and south are usually covered by domestic flights. Cross the road slowly and steadily through the scooters, without sudden stops. At temples and pagodas, shoulders and knees must be covered.

Local food

Try phở and bún chả in Hanoi, bún bò Huế in Hue, cao lầu in Hoi An and bánh mì everywhere. Coffee is a local passion: cà phê sữa đá, with condensed milk and ice, or Hanoi's egg coffee.
